Excitement as Project Fame audition begins

SINCE the auditions for the seventh season of the MTN Project Fame began last Saturday across the West Africa countries, including Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Nigeria, students of tertiary institutions and a cross section of entertainment- loving youths have begun to show their excitement. Akeem Adepoju, a student of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Osun State said he is prepared to have another great time watching the telecast of the reality show this year. “I just can’t wait to watch the contestants perform,” he said. Facebook's Zuckerberg pledges $120 million to Bay Area schools

Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan have pledged $120 million to Bay Area schools to help underserved communities in San Francisco, the two wrote in an essay to the San Jose Mercury News. The announcement, made in the Bay Area paper on Thursday night, marks Zuckerberg's latest charitable donation to lagging public education systems. In 2010, the tech tycoon donated $100 million to beleaguered public schools in Newark, New Jersey. "The investments we've made are a drop in the bucket compared to the challenges schools face. But we've seen that targeted investments can be catalysts for much bigger changes in communities, and give vital support to leaders and organizations," the couple said. "Helping improve the quality of public education in this country is something we both really care about." New film relays Kudirat Abiola’s struggle

A feature-length documentary film on the ordeal of the late Hajia Kudirat Abiola, wife of the late business mogul and winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Bashorun MKO Abiola, by an American filmmaker, may be released in Nigeria soon. Called The Supreme Price , the film, according to the director,  Joanna Lipper, a lecturer at Harvard University, United States, traces the evolution of the pro-democracy movement in Nigeria and efforts to increase the participation of women in leadership roles. “I set out to make a film that honours the personal and professional sacrifices that Kudirat and other women activists make on a daily basis as agents of change in Nigeria,” said the documentary filmmaker. Mama G and other Nollywood stars march for release of Chibok girls

Lagos – Some Nollywood stars led by Patience Ozokwor on Thursday marched from Allen Avenue to Alausa Secretariat soliciting for the release of the kidnapped Chibok school girls. The actors included Chinedu Ikedieze, popularly known as Aki, Ejiro Okurame, Mercy Aigbe, Femi Ogedengbe, Thelma Okaz and Tony Akposhere. Amosun weeps over conditions of prisoners in Ogun

Gov. Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun on Thursday broke into tears at the pitiable sight of inmates at Oba prison in Abeokuta. Amosun, who had earlier granted amnesty to 15 inmates at Ibara prison also in Abeokuta, could not hold back his emotions at Oba prison over what he described as the “inhuman condition” to which the inmates were subjected. The governor was informed that majority of the 492 inmates on awaiting trial list at the prison had spent between four and seven years in jail. He ordered immediate medical attention for the inmates with critical medical conditions and directed that others should be taken to the hospital. While conceding that prison services was under the control of the Federal Government, Amosun said it would be irresponsible of any leader to neglect the conditions of prison inmates. 'Rich List' counts more than 100 UK billionaires

The number of billionaires living in the UK has risen to more than 100 for the first time, according to the 2014 Sunday Times Rich List. There are now 104 billionaires based in the UK with a combined wealth of more than £301bn, the list says . That means the UK has more billionaires per head of population than any other country. London has more billionaires than any other city in the world with 72 - far ahead of nearest rival Moscow with 48. The Indian-born brothers Sri and Gopie Hinduja - who run the conglomerate Hinduja Group - top the list with a fortune of £11.9bn. Alisher Usmanov is no longer the richest man in the UK Arsenal shareholder and Russian business magnate Alisher Usmanov fell to second after his estimated fortune dropped to £10.65bn. • Targets 3,000Megawatts Delta State has taken the lead in the generation of renewable energy as Canada has pledged to invest $5billion to produce 3,000 megawatts (Mw) of electricity. The initiative of the state government to key into the green economy programme of the global community paid off as the Federal Government signed the Foreign Investments Protection Agreement (FIPA) with Canada to remove bottlenecks to make smooth the take-off of Canadian investments in Nigeria. Similarly, Delta State government signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with a Canadian investor, Skypower Energy to build and generate solar-powered electricity in the state. The Minister of Industry, Trade and Foreign Investments, Mr. Olusegun Aganga, said the Canadian investor was investing $5 billion in renewable energy in the country. HOLLYWOOD actress, Angelina Jolie, has described the kidnapping of over 200 school girls in Nigeria by Boko Haram insurgents as “unthinkable cruelty.” The popular star spoke on Tuesday in Paris about the themes of her latest film, Maleficent, in which she plays a vindictive fairy driven to curse an infant princess. “Sadly, of course, there is real evil in the world. You watch the news and you see all of the people suffering and so much cruelty. And it’s unthinkable cruelty like these girls that were kidnapped in Nigeria. The Federal Government on Friday promised to contribute $10m to the Safe School Initiative  Fund initiated by the United Nation’s Special Envoy for Global Education, Gordon Brown. Brown initiated the fund following the abduction of schoolgirls from Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State. The former British Prime Minister told journalists on the sidelines of the just-concluded World Economic Forum for Africa in Abuja that President Goodluck Jonathan announced the contribution during a meeting between the two of them.
